Medium and large-sized mammals in a Cerrado area of the state of Goiás, Brazil

Abstract: Abstract:Brazilian mammal fauna is considered to be the richest of the Neotropical region. However, in several regions of the country, there are gaps in the knowledge of its mammal fauna. Thus, we conducted a survey of the medium and large-sized mammal species in the fragmented Cerrado region in the southeast area of the state of Goiás. Nonlinear transects were conducted in 28 sessions over 13 months using direct observation methods, indirect observation methods (scratches, footprints, feces and lairs) and cam… Show more

“…The species richness and diversity recorded is high when compared to studies carried out in Cerrado and Atlantic Forest fragments located in the midwest and southeast regions of Brazil. By comparison: Silva (2012) recorded 20 species of medium and large-sized mammals in four Cerrado fragments in the municipality of Ipameri, state of Goiás; Alves et al (2014) recorded 18 species of mammals in three fragments in Uberlândia, state of Minas Gerais; Estrela et al (2015) recorded 25 species of mammals in a fragment in the municipality of Urutaí, state of Goiás.…”

“…1). Previous studies in Southeast GO registered six records of P. maximus from 2004 to 2014 (Araújo et al, 2015;Chiarello et al, 2015;Estrela et al, 2015;Gomes et al, 2015), while the present study registered 39 records in 17 different private reserves and protected areas. Based on the home range of a giant armadillo (500 to 1,500 ha; Silveira et al, 2009)) we assume that at least one animal was living in remnants surrounding the record points.…”

“…However, P. maximus has been rarely sighted in recent years, mostly due to intense habitat loss combined with road-killing and poaching (Chiarello et al, 2008). Despite their ecological importance and conservation status, only recently intensive mammal surveys have been conducted in natural remnants across our study region (e.g., Bruna et al, 2010;Araújo et al, 2015;Estrela et al, 2015;Gomes et al, 2015;Rocha, Soares & Pereira, 2015). By this, our study represents the largest (N = 52) and longest (13 years Fig.…”
