Medium-resolution Isaac Newton Telescope library of empirical spectra

Abstract: A new stellar library developed for stellar population synthesis modelling is presented. The library consists of 985 stars spanning a large range in atmospheric parameters. The spectra were obtained at the 2.5‐m Isaac Newton Telescope and cover the range λλ 3525–7500 Å at 2.3 Å (full width at half‐maximum) spectral resolution. The spectral resolution, spectral‐type coverage, flux‐calibration accuracy and number of stars represent a substantial improvement over previous libraries used in population‐synthesis mo… Show more

“…We make use of the Pipe3D pipeline (Sánchez et al 2016a) to model the stellar continuum with 156 templates with 39 ages and 4 stellar populations that were extracted from a combination of the synthetic stellar spectra from the GRANADA library (Martins et al 2005) and the MILES project (Sánchez-Blázquez et al 2006;Vazdekis et al 2010;Falcón-Barroso et al 2011). Details of the fitting procedures are described in Sánchez et al (2016b).…”

“…We use the MILES stellar population models (Vazdekis et al 2010), which are based high resolution empirical stellar spectra of the MILES stellar library (Sánchez-Blázquez et al 2006), under the assumption of a Salpeter IMF. We also assume that the star formation history of the galaxies varies linearly in log-time space.…”

“…This is essential for the interpretation of galaxy spectra where calibration stars are not available, such as large galaxy redshift surveys or other high-redshift observations. Johansson et al (2010) produced new empirical fitting functions based on the MILES library (Sánchez-Blázquez et al 2006) that relate absorption line strength with stellar parameters, that are adopted in the models. These models can directly be applied to SDSS data with minimal correction for spectral resolution (Beifiori et al 2011).…”
