Meerwein Arylation

Abstract: It is a copper salt‐initiated reaction between an aryl diazonium salt and an alkene (or an alkyne, arene) that is activated by an electron‐withdrawing group and is generally referred to as the Meerwein arylation. Die Photokatalyse mit sichtbarem Licht hat sich im letzten Jahrzehnt zu einer breit angewandten Methode in der organischen Synthese entwickelt. Für viele wichtige Reaktionen, wie Kreuzkupplungen, α‐Amino‐Funktionalisierungen, Cycloadditionen, ATRA‐Reaktionen oder Fluorierungen, wurden photokatalytische Varianten berichtet. Um Chemiker bei der Auswahl photokatalytischer Methoden für ihre Synthesen zu unterstützen, vergleichen wir in diesem Aufsatz klassische und photokatalytische Verfahren für ausgewählte Reaktionsklassen und zeigen deren Vorteile und Grenzen auf. In vielen Fällen verlaufen die photokatalytischen Reaktionen unter milderen Reaktionsbedingungen, typischerweise bei Raumtemperatur, und stöchiometrische Reagenzien werden durch einfache Oxidanzien oder Reduktionsmittel wie Luft, Sauerstoff oder Amine ersetzt. Beeinflusst die Photokatalyse mit sichtbarem Licht die organische Synthese? Die Aussicht, Elektronen zu Substraten und Zwischenprodukten hin‐ und herzuschieben oder Energie selektiv durch einen sichtbares Licht absorbierenden Photokatalysatoren zu übertragen, verspricht die aktuellen Verfahren in der Radikalchemie zu verbessern und neue Wege durch den Zugang zu reaktiven, bisher unbekannten Spezies zu erschließen, insbesondere durch das Zusammenspiel von Photokatalyse mit der Organo‐ oder Metallkatalyse.

Visible-light photocatalysis has evolved over the last decade into a widely used method in organic synthesis. Photocatalytic variants have been reported for many important transformations, such as cross-coupling reactions, α-amino functionalizations, cycloadditions, ATRA reactions, or fluorinations. To help chemists select photocatalytic methods for their synthesis, we compare in this Review classical and photocatalytic procedures for selected classes of reactions and highlight their advantages and limitations. In many cases, the photocatalytic reactions proceed under milder reaction conditions, typically at room temperature, and stoichiometric reagents are replaced by simple oxidants or reductants, such as air, oxygen, or amines. Does visible-light photocatalysis make a difference in organic synthesis? The prospect of shuttling electrons back and forth to substrates and intermediates or to selectively transfer energy through a visible-light-absorbing photocatalyst holds the promise to improve current procedures in radical chemistry and to open up new avenues by accessing reactive species hitherto unknown, especially by merging photocatalysis with organo- or metal catalysis.
