Melamine–isatin tris Schiff base as an efficient corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 0.5 molar hydrochloric acid solution: weight loss, electrochemical and surface studies

Abstract: In the current study, 3,3′,3′′-((1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)tris(azaneylylidene))tris(indolin-2-one) (MISB), which is the condensation product of melamine (triazine) and isatin, was investigated as a mild steel corrosion inhibitor in 0.5 M HCl.

“…The FMO energies, E HOMO and E LUMO , have been said to be the most critical parameters to determine if an inhibitor has undergone adsorption to show an anticorrosive effect. 74 An inhibitor with a high E HOMO value is more likely to donate its electrons to the empty d-orbitals of the metal atoms and make coordination bonds. 18 From Table 7, we can see that E HOMO of the copolymer is much higher than that of the homopolymer.…”

“…Various SB and their metallic complexes have demonstrated their effectiveness in effectively preventing the corrosion of steel in acidic environments. , Arshad et al studied the anticorrosive potential of synthesized melamine–isatin tris Schiff bases for mild steel in 0.5 M HCl. The maximum inhibitory efficiency (92.07%) was obtained at a concentration of 42.80 × 10 –3 mM . Abd-elmaksoud et al investigated the anticorrosive potential of two organic inhibitors prepared via SB for CS in a 2 M HCl solution; the highest inhibition efficiency observed was 95.56% at a concentration of 150 ppm .…”

“…There are several organic inhibitors like amines, polyamines, aldehydes, ketones, triazoles, phosphonates, sulfonates, sulfonamides, tannins, surfactants, organic acids and their salts exhibiting good efficacy in mitigation of corrosion. Inhibitors made of Schiff base and heterocyclic compounds with nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and sulphur elements have been reported to have superior corrosion inhibition efficacy in acidic solutions with O>N>S>P order which is ascribed to the π‐electrons on them and their electronegativities [2–6] …”
