Melanoma metastases in the abdomen and pelvis: Frequency and patterns of spread

Abstract: AIM:To investigate the frequency, typical and atypical locations and patterns of melanoma metastases identifiable by computed tomography (CT) in the abdomen and pelvis. METHODS:We performed a retrospective review of index CT examinations of the abdomen and pelvis in patients with melanoma and recorded all findings suggestive of metastatic disease. RESULTS:Metastases were present on 36% (181/508) of the index examinations and most commonly involved the liver (47%) and pelvic lymph nodes (27%). Lower extremity p… Show more

“…Approximately 10% of cutaneous melanomas (CMs) recur as locoregional metastases following treatment [1]. Of these, ≈ 15% involve the pelvis [2], with only 2% of pelvic/inguinal metastases presenting in the absence of leg lesions [3]. Over the past 15 years, local, regional and systemic treatments for locoregional metastatic melanoma have evolved.…”

“…Therefore, in the last six years, options for treatment of advanced melanoma patients have significantly changed, thanks to new target therapy and immunotherapy. The new era of effective systemic therapy, also involves patients with pelvic locoregional metastases without lesions in the legs, which are approximately less than 2% of all malignant melanoma patients [ 3 , 4 ].…”
