Melatonin and CIDR improved the follicular and luteal haemodynamics, uterine and ovarian arteries vascular perfusion, ovarian hormones and nitric oxide in cyclic cows

Abstract: This study hypothesizes that melatonin with exogenous progesterone (CIDR) can improve follicular, luteal, ovarian and uterine haemodynamic of heat‐stressed cows. Holstein cows (N = 12) studied for two spontaneous oestrous cycles during winter then divided equally during summer into the CIDR group received CIDR for 7 days and the melatonin group (Mel) received three injections of melatonin (75 mg/head) at the CIDR insertion, removal and ovulation days. Blood samples were collected to assay oestradiol (E2), prog… Show more

“…We used grey B-mode to detect the numerous testicular anatomical structures and diagnose possible pathologies. Testicular length, width, height and testicular volume (0.523 × height × length × width) were calculated according to the ellipsoid equation (Gouletsou et al, 2008) The ultrasound device used in this current work was EXAGO (Echo Control Medical, France) and was equipped with normal B-mode and modified with colour and pulsed Doppler modes using a linear array probe with a frequency of 5-7.5 MHz (Abdelnaby & Abo El-Maaty, 2021). The Doppler settings are (power: max (100%), pulse repetition frequency: 3.3-5 kHz, Doppler angle: 45°, size of the gate sample: 1 mm, brightness: 70%, two-colour map and maximum Doppler velocity scale is 30 cm/s; EXAGO, France; Fouad et al,2018;Maher, Farghali, Elsayed, et al, 2020).…”

“…ER and progesterone receptor (PR) were distinguished in the buffalo ovarian sections [28], both luminal and glandular epithelial cells in addition to stromal cells in the uterus of bovine [28] during the follicular (FP) and luteal (LP) phases and in rabbits during pseudopregnancy [29]. Nitric oxide (NO) is a paracrine mediator with a wide range of physiological roles, including arterial dilation/permeability modulation [30] and neurotransmission [31]. Several lines of evidence imply that NO is involved in cycle-dependent ovarian events, such as ovulation and luteal function modulation [32,33].…”

“…All alterations in uterine vascular perfusion were assessed via a Doppler ExaGo device (made in France) with a 5–7.5 MHz linear probe. The uterus was examined with a slow scan of the entire uterus by B‐mode and then colour mode was activated to capture a 15–30 s video for later recording (Abdelnaby & Abo El‐Maaty, 2021). The evaluation protocol includes the presence of pixels of the uterine body (using Image J program) represented by the blue and red colours of the colour Doppler, and the vascular distribution of the uterus, including all layers (Abdelnaby, El‐Maaty, & El‐Badry, 2021).…”
