To explore the mechanism(s) of exercise training on ovariectomized (OVX)-induced liver lipid disorder, we observed effects of treadmill training on liver fat accumulation and ER alpha expression in intact and ovariectomized rats. Sixty female rats were randomly assigned to six groups: Sham sedentary (S-S), Sham exercised (S-EX), ovariectomized sedentary (O-S), ovariectomized exercised (O-EX), ovariectomized injected subcutaneously with 17beta-estradiol (E(2)) (O-E(2)), and ovariectomized treated with E(2) and exercise (O-E(2)-EX). Twelve weeks after intervention, OVX resulted in significantly higher body weight gain, intra-abdominal fat mass, serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), and liver triacylglycerol (TAG) concentrations and ER alpha expression than S-S group, while the relative uterus and liver mass, serum levels of E(2), TAG, and the ratio of high density lipoprotein (HDL) to TC were markedly lower in O-S group. All of these changes were decreased in O-S rats after treatment with E(2) alone with the exception of serum TC and HDL-C levels and liver ER alpha expression. Exercise alone significantly reversed the effect of OVX on serum E(2), the ratio of HDL-C to TC and the liver and intra-abdominal fat accumulation in OVX rats. The addition of E(2) to exercise induced the same uterus and lipid profile as E(2) alone. Moreover, an additive effect of exercise and E(2) was observed on liver ER alpha expression in Sham or OVX rats. In conclusion, treadmill training alone could prevent liver fat accumulation in OVX rats and the regulation of exercise on liver ER alpha expression in both OVX and Sham rats needs the presence of physical estrogen levels.

Background: The prevalence of obese adult women has increased dramatically in the United States. Individuals consuming alcoholic beverages may obtain as much as 6–10% of their calories from ethanol; consequently, ethanol may contribute to a positive energy balance and weight gain in women consuming ethanol. The objective of these studies is to determine if ethanol consumption affects weight gain or body fat levels in female mice. Methods: In order to determine the effects of ethanol consumption on weight gain, female mice were given either water or 20% w/v ethanol in the drinking water; mice were then placed on 1 of 3 diets for 20 weeks: (1) 30% calorie-restricted diet, (2) low-fat diet or (3) high-fat diet. Mice were scanned using a GE Lunar Piximus Densitometer to determine body fat, lean body mass and bone mineral density. Results: Mice consuming the high-fat diet had the highest body weight. Moreover, ovariectomy exacerbated the effects of the high-fat diet. That is, ovariectomized female mice consuming the high-fat diet gained a higher amount of body weight and adipose tissue than nonovariectomized mice consuming the high-fat diet. Ethanol-consuming mice did not have a higher susceptibility to gaining body weight or body fat, even though they tended to have higher caloric intake than water-consuming mice. Conclusions: In female mice that consumed a high-fat diet, chronic ethanol consumption did not increase susceptibility to gaining weight or becoming obese.

Introduction: Postmenopausal women manifest emotional disorders associated with an increase in appetite. The aim of the study was to assess the serotonin and melatonin secretion and metabolism in postmenopausal women in relation to eating disorders. Material and methods: Sixty postmenopausal women and 30 women without hormonal disturbances were enrolled into the study and divided into three groups: group I (control) -women without menstrual disorders, group II -postmenopausal women without appetite disorders and change in body weight, and group III -postmenopausal women with increased appetite and weight gain. Serum melatonin, serotonin, urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin (aMT6s), and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) excretion were measured. Results: Serum serotonin and melatonin levels in groups II and III were lower compared to group I. Urinary 5-HIAA and aMT6s excretion was lower in overweight women. In group III the correlation between the serum level of serotonin, melatonin, and BMI was negative; a high statistical significance was found between BMI and urinary aMT6s excretion.
