Melons: Effects of vine pruning and nitrogen on yields and quality

Abstract: Two melon (Cucumis melo L. var. reticulatus) cultivars, 'Prince PR' and Tenkei', were grown under PVC cloches at Pukekohe, New Zealand, with nitrogen (N) fertiliser applied at 30 or 120 kg/ha, and with vines pruned to varying extents to modify the total number offruit retained on each plant. Yields and quality of fruit at maturity were determined. Increasing the N application from 30 to 120 kg N/ha increased total fruit yields by 11 % and 28% for 'Prince PR' and 'Tenkei' respectively, and increased marketable … Show more

“…Increasing total yield (ton / fed.) with increasing chemical N fertilizer rates agreed with those obtained on pumpkin by Das and Swain (1977); Rajendran (1983), Swiader et al, (1988; Reiners and Riggs (1997) and Feleafel et al (2000) , on squash by Huett (1986); Huett and Dettmann, (1988), Hilal and Selim (1992); Abd-El-Fattah and Sorial (2000); and on melons by Buwalda and Freeman (1986). Application of organic manures had increased total yield.…”

“…Iranian farmers have used pruning and thinning techniques to produce melons from ancient times. These techniques have been widely used to enhance fruit size, yield, and quality elsewhere (Baljee et al, 1982;Buitelaor, 1987;Duwalda and Freeman, 1986;Kashi and Abedi, 1999). For selection of fruiting vines and maintaining two fruits per plant, the main stem tip is pinched when young and melons will be set at the sixth or seventh node of the two primary branches.…”

“…Para a lâmina de água de 422,1 mm, correspondente à evaporação do tanque Classe "A", o rendimento máximo estimado seria alcançado com a aplicação de 383,5 kg.ha -1 de nitrogênio. Este valor é praticamente três vezes o obtido por Buwalda & Freeman (1986) para a cultura do melão.…”
