Membrane-Based Portable Colorimetric Gaseous Chlorine Sensing Probe

Abstract: Highly toxic chlorine gas imposes serious health risks in the workplace. The ability to on-site, real-time monitoring of instantaneous and time-weighted average (TWA) chlorine gas concentrations in a simple, sensitive, accurate, and reliable manner would be highly beneficial to improve workplace health and safety. Here, we propose and experimentally validate a gaseous chlorine detection principle based on a N,N-diethyl-p-phenylenediamine sulfate salt/Cl2 colorimetric reaction-controlled membrane process to reg… Show more

“…Different optical detection techniques have been implemented in portable analytical devices, including fluorescence, biochemiluminescence (BL-CL), and colorimetric detection. BL-CL presents significant advantages especially in terms of sensitivity, low cost, and ease of integration with miniaturized systems. , Different portable light detectors have been exploited to detect BL-CL signals, including photomultipliers (PMT), charge-coupled devices (CCDs), complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) sensors, and smartphone-integrated CMOS. Due to their high efficiency, PMTs are the most used detectors. However, the PMT technology has relevant drawbacks, such as intrinsic complexity and fragility, high energy consumption and requirement of high voltages .…”

“…Metabolite core structure-based Search (McSearch), is a program available both as an R-package and a web-based tool for automated metabolite annotation for LC–MS/MS data. It utilizes a Core Structure-based Search (CSS) algorithm, hypothetical neutral loss (HNL) library and biotransformation database to achieve metabolite annotation using the structural analogs of query compounds (Xing et al 2020 ). The tool is available both as single search mode (.csv files) and batch search mode (.mgf or .mzXML formats).…”

“…Different strategies to prolong the lifetime of colorimetric sensors have been used. Zhou et al made a membrane-based colorimetric chlorine sensor for continuous chlorine gas monitoring for an extended period with a specially designed membrane to control the diffusion of the gas, which prevented rapid sensor saturation [ 33 ]. Sotirov et al built a metal-organic framework based on a trimesic acid and Co 2+ colorimetric sensing material for ammonia (NH 3 ) detection; they showed sensor reusability by applying an acidic process to regenerate the sensor [ 34 ].…”
