Membrane glycolipids in stem cells

Abstract: Stem cells, such as embryonic stem cells, hematopoietic stem cells, neural stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, and very small embryonic-like stem cells, are undifferentiated cells that are endowed with a high potential for proliferation and the capacity for self-renewal with retention of pluri/multipotency to differentiate into their progenies. Recently, studies regarding the biological functions of glycolipids and cell surface microdomains (caveolae, lipid rafts, or glycolipid-enriched microdomains) in stem c… Show more

“…8 33 In Fig. 9, it can be seen that the EC23 treated cells are in agreement with the results seen by 50 Heraud for the carbohydrate absorption band at ~1155 cm -1 , however, there was an increase in absorption at ~2920 cm - To test these possibilities, ATRA and EC23 treated TERA2.cl.SP12 cells were compared at all time periods, Fig. 11 (a).…”

“…produces very few neurons and a large number of epithelial-like 50 cells. 14 At present, it is not entirely clear how relatively small structural changes in these types of small molecules effect the different development processes, and this is therefore an important and developing area of study.…”

“…For example, membrane rafts segregated pro-from anti-apoptotic IGF1R signaling in cancer cells stimulated by members of the tumor necrosis factor superfamily through tuning the IRS-1/AKT signaling (Remacle-Bonnet et al, 2005). Indeed, bioactive lipids have been shown to play a pivotal role in the survival/proliferation of neural and cancer stem cells (Yu et al, 2010;Bieberich, 2012).…”

“…Although glycosphingolipids and signaling lipids have been studied in relation to the cell identity and functions (15)(16)(17)(18), an important group of membrane lipids, the glycerophospholipids (GPL), composing the main part of membrane lipids has received less attention. The most prominent class, phosphatidylcholine (PC), makes up approximately one half of all membrane phospholipids.…”
