Membrane Trafficking Proteins: A New Target to Identify Resistance to Viruses in Plants

Abstract: Replication cycles from most simple-stranded positive RNA viruses infecting plants involve endomembrane deformations. Recent published data revealed several interactions between viral proteins and plant proteins associated with vesicle formation and movement. These plant proteins belong to the COPI/II, SNARE, clathrin and ESCRT endomembrane trafficking mechanisms. In a few cases, variations of these plant proteins leading to virus resistance have been identified. In this review, we summarize all known interact… Show more

“…COPs are proteins that coat the vesicles trafficking between the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus. COPI and COPII have been shown to be involved in the replication of positive-strand RNA viruses such as tombusviruses and potyviruses ( Agaoua et al, 2021 ).…”

“…For reduced sensitivity to clethodim, two important candidate gene hits with multiple grass species were obtained in close vicinities of two significant SNPs (S05_47637569 and SNP S08_15270772). Of these, vacuolar protein sorting (VPS)-associated protein 20 (VPS20) is part of Endosomal Sorting Complex Required for Transport (ESCRT)-III, responsible for vacuolar-based degradation pathway ( Agaoua et al, 2021 ). The herbicides that are inactivated by GST-catalyzed glutathione conjugation are transported into vacuoles for further metabolism ( YU et al, 2013 ; Cai et al, 2014 ).…”

“…Most the pathogenic viruses contain the core of RNA and with the help of endomembrane (ER, peroxisome, chloroplast, vacuole, etc.) form complex structures or inclusion bodies and replicate within the host cell ( Agaoua et al, 2021 ). These membranes also take part in the transportation of viruses and their proteins ( DeBlasio et al, 2015 ).…”
