We report the phenomenon of coherent super decay (CSD), where a linear sum of the displacement of several damped oscillators can collectively decay much faster than the individual ones in the first stage, followed by stagnating ones after more than 97% of the energy has been dissipated. The parameters of the damped oscillators for CSD are determined by the process of response function decomposition, which is to use several slow decay response functions to approximate the response function of a fast decay resonator. Evidence established in experiments and in finite element numerical simulations not only strongly supported the numerical investigations, but also uncovered an unexplored region of the tuned mass damper (TMD) parameter space where TMD’s with total mass less than 0.2% of a stainless steel plate can damp its first resonance at 100 Hz up to a damping ratio of 4.6%. Our findings also shed light onto the intriguing underline relationships between complex functions with different singular points.

This work is aimed to study the bandgap property of a thin plate structure with periodically attached bilayer membrane-type resonators. An analytical method based on the Plane Wave Expansion (PWE) method combined with the Rayleigh method, is proposed to predict the bandgap property of bilayer membrane-type metamaterials. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified by the finite element analysis, and a parametric analysis is conducted to reveal the effect of parameters on the bandgap performance. It is found that such a metamaterial can generate two separated bandgaps through the contribution of its two layers of membranes. It is observed that the increase of membrane tensile stress or the magnitude of attached mass can lead to the broadening of bandgaps, whilst the change of unit cell's periodicity has the opposite effect. In addition, if compared with the corresponding single layer membrane-type metamaterials, it is shown that the bilayer membranetype's first bandgap is suppressed while the second one is extended. However, by applying proper membrane tensile stress and mass magnitude, the suppression of the first bandgap can be weakened whilst allowing the tuning of the bandgap location. These characteristics reveal the benefits of using bilayer membrane-type metamaterial as it possesses higher agility in bandgap tuning. The proposed method can provide an effective tool for the bilayer membrane-type metamaterial design and optimisation.

To address the incompatibility between high environmental adaptability and deep subwavelength characteristics in conventional local resonance metamaterials, and overcome the deficiencies in the stability of existing active control techniques for band gaps, this paper proposes a design method of pure metal vibration damping metamaterial with continuously tunable stiffness for wideband elastic wave absorption. We design a dual-helix narrow-slit pure metal metamaterial unit, which possesses the triple advantage of high spatial compactness, low stiffness characteristics, and high structural stability, enabling the opening of elastic flexural band gaps in the low-frequency range. Similar to the principle of a sliding rheostat, the introduction of continuously sliding plug-ins into the helical slits enables the continuous variation of the stiffness of the metamaterial unit, achieving a continuously tunable band gap effect. This successfully extends the effective band gap by more than ten times. The experimental results indicate that this metamaterial unit can be used as an additional vibration absorber to absorb the low-frequency vibration energy effectively. Furthermore, it advances the metamaterial absorbers from a purely passive narrowband design to a wideband tunable one. The pure metal double-helix metamaterials retain the subwavelength properties of metamaterials and are suitable for deployment in harsh environments. Simultaneously, by adjusting its stiffness, it substantially broadens the effective band gap range, presenting promising potential applications in various mechanical equipment operating under adverse conditions.
