Mental Illness and Crime

Abstract: The relationship between mental illness and violence has been subjected to much empirical scrutiny. Early research suggested that mental disorders have no association with violence or victimization. However, recent research has indicated the contrary. This entry will report on the empirical evidence for the epidemiology of violence by and against persons with mental illnesses and will provide theoretical explanations for such findings.
