“…Like metallic mercury, mercuric mercury in the bloodstream adheres to sulfhydryl groups on erythrocytes, metallothionein, or glutathione or is suspended in plasma [ 26 ]. Mercuric mercury does not cross the blood-brain barrier efficiently, but it does accumulate in quantity in the placenta, fetal tissues, and amniotic fluid [ 35 ]. Evidence exists showing transport of mercuric mercury via one or more amino acid transporters [ 39 ], particularly that for cysteine, which may account for accumulation in the brain [ 5 ].…”

“…On the other hand, based on the study of Hubermont et al (26), placental barrier does not exist for Hg. In a Japanese study using amniotic fluid as a monitoring specimen it was demonstrated that Hg was present at detectable levels in almost all of the samples, and that the level of inorganic Hg was consistently higher than that of organic Hg by a factor of 3 (36). These investigators also reported that Hg level changed according to gestational age for both forms of Hg, with the highest value being observed in the 7th month of gestation.…”

“…Also, subjects of child bearing age consuming fish frequently and into the pregnancy period run the risk of exposing the fetus to abnormal levels of Hg, particularly organic-Hg. There have also been studies reporting both organic and inorganic Hg in amniotic fluids from human studies carried out in Japan (36). The overall significance of these findings is yet to be understood.…”
