Merkel cell distribution in the human eyelid

Abstract: Although Merkel cell carcinoma of the eyelid is reported frequently in the literature, only limited information exists about the distribution of Merkel cells in this tissue. Therefore, serial sections of 18 human cadaver eyelids (donors ages ranging between 63 and 97 years) were stained for cytokeratin 20 in various planes. The overall appearance of Merkel cells in these samples was low and mainly located in the outer root layer of the cilia hair follicles. Merkel cells were more frequent in the middle, and al… Show more

“…Studies indicate that the presence of neuropeptides, accumulated near the nerve fibre junction, signifies their action in the expression of voltage gated ion channels which are essential for synaptic transmission. However, conflicting evidence, using histochemical markers, suggests a paracrine function of Merkel cells [ 12 ].…”

“…The posterior lamella, including the mucocutaneous junction and lid wiper areas, contain simple and Meissner corpuscles [176]. Mechano-nociceptors, such as Merkel's disks and Meissner corpuscles, respond to hair movement and light touch, respectively, but are rare in the eyelid, occurring around the cilia roots and being more prevalent in the central compared to the outer eyelid margin [192]. The eyelid margin is more sensitive than other conjunctival areas, but less sensitive than the cornea [175,193].…”

“…Mostly they are concentrated in the palms of hands, predominantly in the finger pads, also in the soles and toes than in any other parts of the body [7]. They are also present in the lips, hard palate, gingiva [4], oesophagus [8], and human eyelid [9]. Concentration of MCs in the external genitalia has not been studied, but Cold and Taylor [10] detected some MCs in the male prepuce and in the female clitoris.…”
