Mesenchymal stem cells: ideal seeds for treating diseases

Abstract: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), a kind of multipotent stem cells with self-renewal ability and multi-differentiation ability, have become the "practical stem cells" for the treatment of diseases. MSCs have immunomodulatory properties and can be used to treat autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and Crohn's disease. MSCs also can be used in cancer and aging. At present, many clinical experiments are using MSCs. MSCs can reduce the occurrence of inflammation and apoptosis of tissue cell… Show more

“…Studies have shown that people with schizophrenia and other psychiatric and neurological disorders have gamma oscillations in their brains ( Gao et al, 2021a , b ). But exactly how gamma oscillations are produced is not clear ( Fan et al, 2020 ; Lu W. et al, 2020 ; Song et al, 2020 ).…”

“…Cells expressing CD73, CD105 and CD90 but not CD34, CD79, CD14, CD45 or HLA-DR are defined as stem cells by the International Society for Cell Therapy (ISCT) Mesenchymal and Tissue Stem Cell Committee (7). MSCs are pluripotent stem cells with multi-directional differentiation and self-renewal ability, which can be used to treat various diseases (8). Mesenchymal stem cells can be used to treat autoimmune diseases due to the immunomodulatory properties of stem cells (9).…”

“…They can differentiate not only into mesoderm, but can also differentiate into endoderm and neuroectoderm-derived cells, and can be targeted to differentiate into various terminal functional cells, such as muscle cells, osteocyte, vascular cells, endothelial cells, and nerve cells, under specific conditions ( Galipeau and Sensebe, 2018 ). MSCs have obtained increasing attention as seed cells for tissue engineering ( Gao et al, 2021 ; Rajasingh et al, 2021 ). In addition, MSCs can also promote the repair of various tissue injuries through direct intercellular contact and paracrine factors such as cytokines, growth factors, and small extracellular vesicles (sEV) ( Keshtkar et al, 2018 ; Xia et al, 2019 ).…”
