Caseous lymphadenitis (CLA), also called pseudotuberculosis, is a chronic and highly infectious disease of sheep and goats, subject to obligatory registration in the European Union. The EU law also applies to special territories, which include the Falkland Islands. On the Falkland Islands 99% of sheep and goats are slaughtered in one slaughterhouse, overseen by veterinary authorities, and approved for export to EU countries (mainly the UK). The export season begins about the middle of January and usually lasts 3-4 months. In the years 2013-2015 were examined 162 317 sheep, including 39 971 lambs, 35 357 yearlings and 86 989 mature rams. During the study lung tissue clippings were collected. During the 2013 season lesions were observed in 8 025 of animals (13.9% CLA). In 2014 lesions were noted in 7716 with CLA accounting for 13.91% and in 2015 lesions were noted in 5743 with CLA accounting for 11.7%. Further analysis of cases of CLA on the Falkland Islands seems interesting, as they are British overseas territories and therefore part of the European Union.

RESUMORelata-se um caso de lesão cutânea secundária à infecção por Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis em bovino. Abscessos e múltiplas lesões cutâneas nodulares, variando de 8x10 para 20x25cm de diâmetro, firmes, sensíveis ao toque e sem mobilidade, algumas com superfície ulcerada, circundada por halo avermelhado e drenando secreção piossanguinolenta, e outras com superfícies alopécicas, foram identificados na região torácica lateral do animal. Exames histopatológicos e o isolamento do agente de fragmentos obtidos após remoção cirúrgica das lesões confirmaram tratar-se da forma cutânea da infecção pelo C. pseudotuberculosis. As lesões microscópicas caracterizaram-se por dermatite nodular piogranulomatosa e ulcerativa. A avaliação da susceptibilidade in vitro do C. pseudotuberculosis a antimicrobianos demonstrou que o agente era resistente à amicacina, kanamicina, neomicina e penicilina G, apresentando sensibilidade à ampicilina adicionada de subactam, amoxicilia com ácido clavulônico, cefalexina, cefalotina, cefotaxima, enrofloxacina, gentamicina e tetraciclina. A retirada cirúrgica das lesões e o tratamento com enrofloxacina resultaram na cura do animal. Lesões de pele observadas em casos de ptiose, carcinoma de células escamosas e na forma atípica da actinobacilose devem ser consideradas no diagnóstico diferencial da forma cutânea da infecção por C. pseudotuberculosis em bovinos. Os dados apresentados demonstram que a infecção pelo C. pseudotuberculosis deve ser considerada no diagnóstico diferencial das lesões de pele em bovinos no Brasil. UFFALOES examined during summer 2006, out of 176 buffaloes out of 176 buffaloes examined 46 animals proved to be contract proved to be contract the disease representing a morbidity rate of 26.1%. On the other hand, out of 120 examined cows, 20 proved to be infected with the disease representing a morbidity rate of 16.6%. Concerning the clinical signs that observed in this epidemic, the disease occurred in 4 forms. The first is the edematous form which appeared in buffaloes more than in cattle. The second form was the ulcerative form, and it was more common in cattle than buffaloes. The 3 td was the nodular form and the 4 ln form was the mixed, the bacteriological examination, showed symptoms of edematous skin disease Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis was isolated as a single infection. The phospholipase D toxin bands of the isolated pathogens were in a molecular size of 37 and 39 KDa. Serological investigation by using agar gel immunodiffusion test was strongly positive in serum samples. On the other hand, the OD reading of ELISA above the cut off point (0.28) was recorded in serum samples.
