Mesenteric cyst: sonographic appearance with CT correlation

Abstract: Two cases of mesenteric cysts are reported. Realtime ultrasound demonstrated the typical appearance of well-defined, anechoic masses. In addition, a solid appearance with a honeycomb pattern of internal echos was observed in one case. The other case had the appearance of loculated, septated ascites. Ultrasound and CT correlation are discussed.

“…However, the recoveries were uneventful. US has proved very efficient in the preoperative diagnosis of mesenteric and omental cysts according to some previous reports and our experiences [6,9,11]. In our series, no other single imaging modality can provide more information than US, as it can easily identify the internal septation in the cysts which may be otherwise missed by CT scan.…”

“…Mesenteric and omental cysts do not have specific signs or symptoms to allow their clinical diagnosis [3]. Since two initial reports of these sonographic appearance in 1975 [4,5], however, such lesions have been detected with an increasing frequency [6][7][8][9][10][11]. This article presents our experience with 15 additional cases evaluated at our institution during the past 12 years.…”

“…Ultrasound correctly identified the presence of a mesenteric cyst in each of our symptomatic patients but could not correctly differentiate a chylous cyst from a serous cyst. This is not unusual since even though the sonographic appearance has been described there remain no definite criteria for distinguishing chy lous cysts from other mesenteric cysts [36,37]. Similarly, even though computed tomography accurately depicts the lesion, substantial overlap exists in the imaging find ings of the cysts that a correct preoperative diagnosis may not be possible [38].…”
