Summary Leaf function is intimately related to the size, shape, abundance and position of cells and chloroplasts. Anatomy has long been assessed and quantified in two dimensions with 3D structure inferred from 2D micrographs. Serial block face scanning electron microscopy (SBF‐SEM) was used to reconstruct 95 cells and 1173 chloroplasts from three wheat and nine chickpea leaves (three samples each from three chickpea genotypes). Wheat chloroplast volume was underestimated by 61% in mesophyll cells and 45% in bundle sheath cells from 2D micrographs, whereas chickpea mesophyll chloroplast volume was underestimated by 60% using simple geometrical models. Models of chickpea spongy and palisade cells both under‐ and overestimated surface area and volume by varying degrees. These models did not adequately capture irregular shapes such as flattening of chloroplasts or lobed spongy mesophyll cells. It is concluded that simple geometrical models to estimate chloroplast and cell 3D volume and surface area from 2D micrographs are inadequate, and that SBF‐SEM has strong potential to contribute to improved understanding of leaf form and function.

ABSTRACT Basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) is a plant that has great potency to be developed. Almost all parts of the plant can be utilized. This study aimed to determine the effect of shade and phosphate fertilizer on growth and essential oil content in basil. This research was conducted at the experimental field of Agrotechnology Departement, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Trunojoyo Madura, during January-April 2015. The research was arranged in a split plot design with 3 replications. Main plot was shading i.e., without shading and 25% shading. The subplots were phosphate fertilizer rate, i.e., 0, 1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 g SP36 per plant that was planted in polybags. The results showed that plants treated with 25% of shading and applied with phosphate 3 g per plant had the highest total dry weight, production of essential oil and eugenol. Shading of 25% give the best results on plant height, leaf area and total fresh weight of the plant. Application of phosphate fertilizer 3 g per plant give the highest content of chlorophyll (chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll), while the highest essential oil and eugenol content of leaves is obtained from application of phosphate fertilizer 3 and 4.5 g per plant. Shading and phosphate fertilizer application did not affect leaf number. Keywords: chlorophyll, eugenol, leaf, phenylpropanoids, production

Abstract-This paper considers the ambiguity of meanings of the word 'road' in Russian folklore, studies the principle of interchangeable relationship in folklore language, based on the similarity of the concepts rather than of the meanings. Through the phenomena of the paradigm of accuracy, synonymous approximation and quasi synonymy the existence of the correlative emphatic constructions type, such as 'pathway', 'swan-geese', 'friends-comrades' and other, is explained. This demonstrates that the laconic brevity of folklore language and its apparent simplicity underneath are like a transparent water depth where even one word is capable of transferring 'the abyss of space' of thought and feeling of the immense complex psychic processes into a harmonious unity with the beauty of the folklore world.
