Mesosphere and Lower Thermosphere Changes Associated With the 2 July 2019 Total Eclipse in South America Over the Andes Lidar Observatory, Cerro Pachon, Chile

Abstract: This article presents the results of a week of observations around the 2 July 2019, total Chilean eclipse. The eclipse occurred between 19:22 and 21:46 UTC, with complete sun disc obscuration at 20:38–20:40 UTC (16:38–16:40 LT) over the Andes Lidar Observatory (ALO) at (30.3°S, 70.7°W). Observations were carried out using ALO instrumentation with the goal to observe possible eclipse‐induced effects on the mesosphere and lower thermosphere region (MLT; 75–105 km altitude). To complement our data set, we have al… Show more

“…Ultra narrowband magneto-optical filters [27], which rely on complex refractive indices, are perfect candidates for non-Hermitian physics but have not yet been studied in this domain. Magneto-optical filters already see many applications in solar weather studies [28][29][30], laser frequency stabilization [31][32][33][34][35], LIDAR, [36][37][38], quantum hybrid systems [39], underwater optical communications [40] and ghost imaging [41]. Optimizing filters is a balance between maximizing transmission and minimizing bandwidth.…”

“…They also observed a large increase in the ΣO/N2 column density ratio (∼80%) within the totality of the eclipse. Vargas et al [42] presented the Andes Lidar Observatory (ALO), TIMED/SABER temperatures, and ionosonde electron density measurements. Bravo et al [43] used an ionosonde within the totality path and ∼500 GNSS receivers localized over South America, which were compared with two ionosonde measurements.…”
