Meta-analyses of cognitive functioning in euthymic bipolar patients and their first-degree relatives

Abstract: Executive function and verbal memory are candidate bipolar endophenotypes given large deficits in these domains in bipolar patients and small, but intermediate, cognitive impairments in first-degree relatives.

“…The similarities in functional hemispheric asymmetries between the euthymic BD patients of the present study and healthy men high in impulsive nonconformity, suggests that BD-related personality traits can already be linked to atypical right hemisphere functioning in emotional prosody, even when not exceeding the pathological level. The idea of a vulnerability marker in BD has been further supported by a meta-analysis comparing euthymic BD and their first-degree healthy relatives, who showed similar cognitive impairments, albeit to a lesser degree (Arts et al, 2008). …”

“…It activates language-related regions involved in the pathophysiology of both disorders (Lawrie and Abukmeil, 1998;Shenton et al, 2001;Glahn et al, 2008;Minzenberg et al, 2009). Moreover, it probes neuropsychological deficits in executive function, verbal initiation, and verbal fluency commonly observed in patients (Gourovitch and Goldberg, 1996;Heinrichs and Zakzanis, 1998;Bokat and Goldberg, 2003;Arts et al, 2008).…”

“…In three analyses of the endophenotype of bipolar disorder with patients, unaffected first-degree relatives (fathers, mothers, brothers, twins, and children), and control targets, the endophenotype markers were shown through neuropsychological measures (10,33) . However, a meta-analysis claims that these findings should be interpreted with caution, as it is very likely that the confusion of factors such as medication, chronicity, and affective symptoms below the threshold are also contributing to the observed results (34) .…”

“…Surveys report that individuals in the manic phase have greater difficulty in processing visuospatial information and verbal fluency (33) . There is a clear potential for losses due to the level of disorganization of behavior and acceleration of mental activity, especially in the presence of psychotic symptoms (37) .…”
