Meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM): new tricks of the trade

Abstract: Meta-analytic structural equation modeling (MASEM) has become a widespread approach to meta-analyze the evidence in a field and to test a (theoretical) multivariate model based on aggregated data. This editorial presents new tricks of the trade and discusses current issues surrounding MASEM that in our view are either insufficiently recognized in the MASEM literature or present new developments. The editorial is organized in three parts, in which we discuss (a) the goals and causal underpinnings of a MASEM, (b… Show more

“…Although it has been confirmed herein that MASEM provides greater utility in identifying research differences than traditional meta-analysis, the size of the difference still depends on the efforts exerted by researchers in applying this method (Bergh et al, 2016). In other words, it is more valuable to apply MASEM to revisit the result of traditional meta-analysis when the difference is larger (Steinmetz & Block, 2022). In addition, MASEM provides strategic management researchers with an explanatory power by comparing different theoretical models (Davis, 2010).…”

“…However, our numbers indicate that both methods are still underrepresented in MRQ. Since we experience that current approaches in replication studies and meta-analyses are less known, we will continue to publish editorials and methodological articles that help authors navigate their research (Burgard and Steinmetz 2022;Hansen et al 2022;Steinmetz and Block 2022). Additionally, we invite authors to submit articles on reviewing methods that might inform other authors about how to conduct bibliographic studies, meta-analyses, replication studies, and structured literature reviews (e.g., Clark et al 2021).…”

“…Meta-analytic structural equation modelling (MASEM) is a powerful mechanism for synthesising prior research findings, reconciling inconsistent conclusions, and resolving variable relationships (Cheung, 2014;Jeyaraj & Dwivedi, 2020;Viswesvaran & One, 1995). The advantage of using the MASEM is that it can test models that involve variables not included in the primary studies (Bergh et al, 2016;Steinmetz & Block, 2022). This approach combines the strengths of meta-analysis, which quantitatively summarises the results of individual studies and structural equation modelling.…”
