Meta‐information about MARC: an XML framework for validation, explanation and help systems

Abstract: This article proposes a schema for meta‐information about MARC that can express at a fairly comprehensive level the syntactic and semantic aspects of MARC formats in XML, including not only rules but also all texts and examples that are conveyed by MARC documentation. It can be thought of as an XML version of the MARC or UNIMARC manuals, for both machine and human usage. The article explains how such a schema can be the central piece of a more complete framework, to be used in conjunction with “slim” record f… Show more

“…The others use their own specific format in their database structure without respecting to international standards. ISO 2709 is the common format for exchange underlying all MARC formats; it consists of a record label, a directory and data fields, with standard characters for separation (de Carvalho et al , 2004, p. 131).…”

“…A correct record is a readable record that contains the required set of fields prescribed by the MARC – in our project I mean UNIMARC – standard to model a given type of bibliographic item – or full‐text in digital libraries – and the content of which follows the relevant coding rules and vocabulary types, wherever applicable. Finally, an adequate record is a readable and correct record that is fit for the purpose defined for that record in its context (de Carvalho et al , 2004, p. 133; de Carvalho and Cordeiro, 2002, pp. 4‐5).…”

“…The paper explains the basic requirements for the schema and those are: XML environment, compatibility with MARC 21, special accommodation of digital resources and simplicity. Paper (Ramos de Carvalho, et al, 2004) proposes the schema for meta-information about MARC. The instance of the proposed schema is an XML document which contains all data about MARC format including not only cataloguing rules, but also all text and examples that are conveyed by MARC documentation.…”

“…38 A MetaMARC Schema is proposed using an XML framework, with the idea that it will lower implementation costs, facilitate the standard use of XML in bibliographic records, and "extend the authoritative function and reach of the documentation produced by the MARC standard agencies." 39 The Library of Congress (LC) has begun developing an XML environment for working with MARC data that will allow for specific uses of the data.…”
