Metabolic characteristics revealing cell differentiation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma by combining NMR spectroscopy with Raman spectroscopy

Abstract: Background The staging system of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has close relationship with the degree of cell differentiation, but most NPC patients remain undiagnosed until advanced phases. Novel metabolic markers need to be characterized to support diagnose at an early stage. Methods Metabolic characteristics of nasopharyngeal normal cell NP69 and two types of NPC cells, including CNE1 and CNE2 associated with high and low differentiation degrees were studied by comb… Show more

“…CNE1 is a highly differentiated human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line, and CNE2 is a poorly differentiated human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cell line (Chen et al. 2019 ). In the present study, LB, a triterpenoid from G. lucidum , inhibited the nasopharyngeal carcinoma CNE2 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner as detected using the MTT assay.…”

“…Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), an epithelial carcinoma originating in the nasopharyngeal mucosal lining, has become one of the major public health problems in Southern China and Southeast Asia (Chen et al. 2019 ). Radiotherapy is the primary treatment modality in early-stage NPC while concurrent chemo-radiation therapy followed by adjuvant chemotherapy is the primary treatment strategy in stages III and IV (Siak et al.…”

“…Huang and colleagues [17] using the clinicopathological data of 1286 NPC patients found that the degree of differentiation of NPC tumor cells was closely related to their biological behavior, and affected tumor staging, lymph node metastasis and treatment, which consequently led to various prognosis in NPC patients. In addition, other domestic and international studies found that the degree of differentiation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma tumor cells was closely related to the degree of malignancy, and affected the survival and prognosis of patients [18][19][20]. The higher the differentiation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma tumor cells had the better the prognosis of patients..…”

“…Hence, the obtained signals between SERS and NMR should have some correlation under the premise of same objects that focused. Other evidences also proposed that the Raman spectral fingerprints may verify the extent of screened key metabolites and link these metabolites to possible characteristics 16,17 …”

“…acute myeloid leukemia, metabolic profiling, nuclear magnetic resonance, prognosis, surfaceenhanced Raman scattering screened key metabolites and link these metabolites to possible characteristics. 16,17 In this work, a combination strategy of Ag nanoparticle (NP)-based SERS and non-targeted NMR metabolomics was carried on serum from non-M3 AML patients. The characteristic information of functional molecular groups and typical metabolites attribution were elucidated and linked to possible biochemical mechanisms.…”
