Metabolic reprogramming in skin wound healing

Zitong Wang,
Feng Zhao,
Chengcheng Xu
et al.

Abstract: Metabolic reprogramming refers to the ability of a cell to alter its metabolism in response to different stimuli and forms of pressure. It helps cells resist external stress and provides them with new functions. Skin wound healing involves the metabolic reprogramming of nutrients, such as glucose, lipids, and amino acids, which play vital roles in the proliferation, differentiation, and migration of multiple cell types. During the glucose metabolic process in wounds, glucose transporters and key enzymes cause … Show more

“…Metabolic reprogramming, a hallmark of cancer cells ( Pavlova et al, 2022 ), involves altering cellular metabolism to manage different inputs and stressors ( Wang et al, 2024 ). Cancer cells adapt their metabolic pathways to oncogenic mutations and external nutritional conditions, supporting their increased biosynthetic and energy needs while mitigating oxidative stress associated with survival and proliferation ( Altea-Manzano et al, 2020 ; McGuirk et al, 2020 ; Schiliro and Firestein, 2021 ).…”

“…Macrophage polarization is closely linked to metabolic reprogramming, with distinct metabolic profiles associated with M1 and M2 phenotypes. 5 , 224 , 225 M1 macrophages rely on glycolysis and the pentose phosphate pathway to meet their energy demands and support their proinflammatory functions. 226 In contrast, M2 macrophages primarily utilize oxidative phosphorylation and fatty acid oxidation for energy production.…”

“…11 Skin wound healing involves metabolic reprogramming of glucose, lipids, amino acids and other nutrients that play a vital role in the proliferation, differentiation and migration of various cell types. 12 The mechanisms of development of disorders of reparative regeneration are not fully understood. There is insufficient information about the features of changes in the basic indicators of metabolic processes during the healing of chronic wounds.…”
