Digital interactive maps include a set of metadata, which show the purpose the user can use the map. Metadata in digital interactive world maps inform users about important information, such as the map projection. This research examines whether the educational and teaching use of the metadata of digital interactive maps construct a tool in the approach to the issue of map projection in Elementary School. The research was carried out in 17 Elementary Schools of Thessaloniki, Greece, where 6th-grade students (Ν = 655) were engaged in a series of activities related to metadata and map projections. ArcGIS Online was used as a didactic tool. Results showed that metadata of digital interactive maps have a great pedagogical value. The identification of the different information in the metadata, i.e., the map projection, and the students’ decision of what they can and cannot study with each map, is an important finding regarding their educational relevance.

Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to highlight the main features of the components of Proquest's giga database package for LIS faculty and students of databases and software services. These allow complimentary access to hundreds of indexing/abstracting, directory and full-text databases, to RefWorks, the most sophisticated reference management program, and to SUMMON, a powerful digital resource discovery program. Design/methodology/approach -This phase of the research focused on evaluating the largest module of GEP which offers 41 databases with more than 200 million records (half of them full-text documents), on the new ProQuest software platform. The paper presents the major content and software features of this module. Findings -The single module, GEP-41, is an important contribution to LIS education, providing free access to LIS faculty and librarians to so many databases covering the LIS and LIS-related fields, including the new ProQuest Library and Information Science database with more than 1.2 million items. The other modules of GEP extend the coverage to databases appropriate to LIS faculty and students interested in various tracks of librarianship. This project certainly will benefit Proquest itself in the long run. From the perspective of the primary beneficiaries, the LIS professors and students, the rich infrastructure for this project offers unprecedented opportunities for a digital renaissance in every aspect of LIS education and research. Originality/value -This service, highly relevant for LIS education worldwide, was released in late 2012, and research papers have not been published about it yet. The paper focuses on the measurable, quantitative traits of the largest component of the service.

Οι τεχνολογίες Σημασιολογικού Ιστού (ΣΙ) επιτρέπουν την κατανόηση δεδομένων από μηχανικά συστήματα και την απόδοση δομής, νοήματος και αξιοπιστίας στον υπάρχοντα Παγκόσμιο Ιστό. Τα Συνδεδεμένα Δεδομένα (ΣΔ) αποτελούν ένα επιπλέον βήμα επιτρέποντας τη διασύνδεση των μηχανικά κατανοητών δεδομένων. Σήμερα οι βιβλιογραφικές οντότητες μοντελοποιούνται εκ νέου βάσει των τεχνολογιών ΣΙ/ΣΔ. Ωστόσο, παρατηρείται μια πληθώρα βιβλιογραφικών μοντέλων με σημαντικές διαφορές μεταξύ τους όσον αφορά στον αριθμό των οντοτήτων και των βιβλιογραφικών σχέσεων που ορίζουν. Υπάρχοντα σύνολα βιβλιογραφικών ΣΔ που έχουν χρησιμοποιήσει αυτά τα μοντέλα παρουσιάζουν επίσης σημαντικές διαφοροποιήσεις. Έτσι, αν και χρησιμοποιούνται τεχνολογίες ΣΔ, η κατανόηση των δεδομένων δεν εξασφαλίζεται. Αυτό αποτελεί ζήτημα σημασιολογικής διαλειτουργικότητας η επίλυση της οποίας είναι απαραίτητη για την αποφυγή ύπαρξης συνόλων δεδομένων βιβλιοθηκών στον ΣΙ που καταλήγουν απομονωμένα και αχρησιμοποίητα. Για την απάντηση του κυρίου ερωτήματος της διατριβής “Είναι η σημασιολογική διαλειτουργικότητα μεταξύ των βιβλιογραφικών μοντέλων εφικτή;” τέθηκαν τέσσερις στόχοι: 1) η μελέτη και σύγκριση μοντέλων βιβλιοθηκών (FRBR, LRM, FRBRoo, RDA, BIBFRAME και EDM), 2) η ανάπτυξη αντιστοιχίσεων μεταξύ των μοντέλων, 3) η αξιολόγηση των αντιστοιχίσεων χρησιμοποιώντας δεδομένα, και 4) ο προσδιορισμός προϋποθέσεων ή καλών πρακτικών καταλογογράφησης για καλύτερες αντιστοιχίσεις. Τα αποτελέσματα της διατριβής επιβεβαιώνουν ότι η σημασιολογική διαλειτουργικότητα είναι εφικτή κάτω από ορισμένες συνθήκες. Όλες οι συνθήκες, τα προαπαιτούμενα και οι καλές πρακτικές που ανιχνεύθηκαν σχετίζονται με τις πολιτικές καταλογογράφησης που εφαρμόζονται. Η τελική δήλωση της διατριβής, λοιπόν, τάσσεται υπέρ της καλύτερης συνεργασίας μεταξύ των εμπλεκομένων φορέων και της υιοθέτησης κοινού τρόπου σκέψης και πρακτικών για την επίλυση ετερογενειών του παρελθόντος και την αποφυγή δημιουργίας νέων.
