Metadata requirements for digital museum environments

Abstract: We describe a system which addresses all the processes involved in digitally acquiring, modelling, storing, manipulating and creating virtual exhibitions from 3D museum artefacts. More specifically, we examine the significance of metadata in enabling and supporting all of these processes and describe the extensive facilities provided for authoring, maintaining and managing metadata. The development of the system has been heavily influenced by factors relating to interoperability, standards, museum best practic… Show more

“…[13] denotes three major classification criteria for cultural heritage objects are subject, time and space, which are supported by the presented framework. [14] presents a system that creates 3D museum artifacts based on defining metadata for the artifacts. Content design in the framework tries to produce independent, presentable objects, as stated in [23], "Finding the criteria that make it possible to distinguish an object from all other objects with which it might be confused is a primary role for a metadata profile.…”

“…In relation to content definition, search and archiving, [15] and [25] present some team-based mechanisms for simplifying these operations on digital content. Furthermore, [14] supports image-based searches, whereas [1] and [21] analyze metadata requirements and organization for multimedia content in various domains. [4] discusses automatic video annotation and retrieval using ontologies.…”

“…The visualization tools seem to be proprietary add-on applications that present items in augmented reality environments. We found only partial counterparts to parameterized exhibition rooms, presentation forms, X-VRML templates or interaction patterns in the AMS as described in [10].…”

“…Several metadata standards have been evaluated. ARCO [6] is the preferred standard due to its high degree of completeness with regard to different metadata types and its ability to handle 3D content [7], [8], [10]. Since ARCO is seen as a promising approach, an in-depth analysis and extension of ARCO and its lightweight substandard ARCOlite [11] is an important subject of ongoing research with regard to the requirements of modern VMs.…”
