“…[ 30–35 ] Researches in understanding the biological effect of ZIF‐8 in bone tissue engineering have focused on drug delivery of therapeutic agents in hosts for bone‐related disease treatment and surface modification of orthopedic implants. [ 36–40 ] To date, our recent efforts on ZIF‐8 have led to nanoscale ZIF‐8 crystals on porous titanium with a crystal size of 200–300 nm that is endowed with excellent cytocompatibility, osteogenic activity, and biodegradability. As Zn 2+ ions were slowly released from the titanium surface without a burst‐release effect, ZIF‐8 crystals could be gradually degraded under biological conditions.…”

“…20,21 Indeed, the potential of MOFs to act as reservoirs and delivery systems for antimicrobial agents to help address the problems of infection and bacterial resistance is now receiving much attention. For example, MOFs can be employed as delivery agents for antimicrobial metal ions such as Zn, Cu and Ag with improved efficiency; 22,23 they offer controlled and potentially more targeted delivery of antibiotics and antiseptics (for example, ciprofloxacin, 24 ceftazidime, 25 vancomycin, 26 metronidazole, 27 rifampicin 28 and tinidazole 29 ); and they can offer combination treatments by delivering multiple agents simultaneously or over different time scales. 30,31 Some reports suggest synergistic effects can be achieved through careful selection of metal ion and antibiotic to heighten drug potency.…”

“…MC3T3-E1 response when cultured on scaffolds of pure chitosan (CHI, used as control) and chitosan with 5% of Van@ZIF-8,bothplain (CHI-5 %-ZIF8) and reinforced( CHI-5 %-ZIF8-CL): (a) proliferation, (b) ALP activity and (c) calciumd eposition. Reproducedw ith permission from reference [25].C opyright 2019, Elsevier. structural arrangements or particlesize show distinct biological properties.…”

“…Reinforced scaffolds with crosslinked glyoxal were also prepared (by treating the scaffolds with a1m m glyoxal ethanol solution). [25] The vancomycin load was released from the scaffolds in ap H-dependent fashion,w ith 70 %b eing released during 48 ha tp H5.4, and only 55 %a tp H7.4. Proliferative evaluation studies showedt hat cells of the MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblast line continued to proliferate on all scaffolds during 21 days of culture ( Figure 15).…”
