Metallocenium Chemistry and Its Emerging Impact on Synthetic Macromolecular Chemistry

Abstract: Cationic metallocenes (or metalloceniums) are a class of sandwich-type compounds with cationic metal centers, which are usually iron, cobalt, or rhodium. These unique charged complexes have received wide attention owing to both rich electrochemistry and the positive charge associated with the transition metal. They are potential building blocks for fabricating functional polyelectrolytes and for possible biomedical applications. As the basis of all metallocenium-containing materials, the synthetic chemistry of… Show more

“…Metallopolymers are functional polymers with metal centers in their frameworks, which can integrate both the functions of metal elements and the properties of polymers . Many different metal‐containing building blocks and polymer topologies have been reported . Due to the presence of metal centers in the framework, metallopolymers show applications in different fields, from catalysis, energy storage, to biomedicine .…”

“…Basically, organic polymers provide flexibility, solubility, and processability, while incorporation of metal elements endows multiple functionalities including redox activity, catalytic, magnetic, responsive, and electronic properties. [3] Therefore, metal-containing polymers with unique and versatile properties should be one of the ideal materials for manufacturing functional hydrogels.…”
