Metatriangulation: Building Theory from Multiple Paradigms

Show more

“…Yet, although some underlying assumptions may conflict, paradigmatic boundaries are often fuzzy and, to a certain extent, permeable (Willmott, 1993;Lewis & Grimes, 1999), thereby facilitating the linking of views created by different paradigms (Gioia & Pitre, 1990;Ritvala & Granqvist, 2006). This problem is also reflected in the key findings of this paper.…”

“…Meta-theorizing aids in theorists by managing their bounded rationality and, thereby, accommodate (not unify) opposing views by achieving a higher level of abstraction, therefore comprehending paradigmatic differences, similarities, and interrelationships (Gioia and Pitre, 1990). Interplay techniques which cognizance of how paradigmatic insights and biases are most recognizable from opposing views highlight contradictions and interdependence invoke a creative tension that may inspire theorists to question paradigm dualisms (Lewis and Grimes, 1999).…”

“…Poole and Van de Ven (1989) describe the concept of paradoxical thinking as a way to reconcile and maintain divergent results while highlighting interdependencies and relationships among the divergent data. Lewis and Grimes (1999) carried out a literature review of multi-paradigm approaches and categorized the techniques employed to manage the natural tensions between philosophies into several types including bracketing, bridging, parallel, sequential, meta-theorizing, and interplay. Paradigm bracketing entails differentiating among varied sets of assumptions where brackets enable theorists to ignore certain aspects of complex phenomena and focus on facets and issues of particular interest (Weaver and Gioia, 1994).…”

“…Proposing mediating mechanisms provides a richer answer to the how it works question. In tackling this, we blended micro-and macro level constructs (Klein, Tosi, & Cannella, 1999;Lewis & Grimes, 1999) into our conceptual framework.…”
