Meteor observations with the European Incoherent Scatter UHF Radar

Abstract: The European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) UHF radar, which operates at a nominal frequency of 930 MHz, is introduced as a powerful meteor radar. Its high sensitivity is utilized to detect transient enhanced ionization trails caused by meteors of all orientations, in contrast to conventional HF and VHF backscatter radars, which observe only the meteor trails oriented approximately normal to the radar beam. A comparison shows that EISCAT observes almost as high hourly rates of meteors as meteor radars do, in spit… Show more

“…However, at higher Doppler shifts the signal power spreads into the other gates (see Fig. 6 in Pellinen- Wannberg and Wannberg, 1994). The decoding of the Barker-compressed signal on receive is performed by matched ®ltering techniques.…”

“…During the Geminid measurements, 66 h of EISCAT data were collected, while during the Perseids 11.5 h of UHF and 10.5 h of VHF data were collected. Overview descriptions of the experiment schemes used for these measurements are given in Pellinen- Wannberg and Wannberg (1994). Figure 2 shows how meteor echoes and simultaneous weak auroral activity appear in a raw electron density vs. time series plot.…”

“…The first meteor head echoes observed with EISCAT were reported in Pellinen- Wannberg and Wannberg (1994). This paper and Pellinen- Wannberg et al (1998) show how meteor head echoes are seen in raw electron time series versus altitude plots both during quiet and during weak auroral activity conditions (see Fig.…”
