Methacrylated Chitosan Based UV Curable Support for Enzyme Immobilization

Abstract: UV curing is simple, fast and effective procedure for enzyme immobilization with minimized enzymatic activity. UV-curable methacrylated chitosan is here proposed as a support material for immobilization of lipase. The morphology of the polymeric support was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Both covalently (CIL) and physically (PIL) immobilized enzyme is analyzed in terms of enzymatic activity as a function of reusability, pH, storage, as well as stability under various experimental conditio… Show more

“…One highly attractive substance for studies in the field of biocomposites is chitosan, a natural polycationic biopolymer, which is usually synthesized from chitin [ 1 , 2 ]. The most important properties of chitosan include biocompatibility, biodegradability, and physical and chemical characteristics that enable polymer materials of different kinds (gels, flakes, fibers, pearls, microspheres, nanoparticles) to be obtained.…”

“…In the FTIR spectrum of MA-Starch, it is possible to observe four new peaks that strongly support a successful methacrylation of some of the starch hydroxyl groups. The peaks at 1709 and 1300 cm −1 can be attributed to the C=O and C-O stretching vibrations, respectively, while the two peaks at 1640 and 815 cm −1 are assigned for the C=CH 2 out of plane bending vibrations [ 28 , 44 , 45 ].…”

“…Figure 3 shows that the formulations with 10 and 15 wt% starch started reacting immediately and reached a G' plateau after 90 s, while the 5 wt% starch formulation showed a delay in the curing process and reached a G' plateau after 120 s. This is probably explained by the low starch concentration in water, which in combination with the overall low DOS decreased the velocity of the radical reaction. attributed to the C = O and C-O stretching vibrations, respectively, while the two peaks at 1640 and 815 cm −1 are assigned for the C = CH2 out of plane bending vibrations [28,44,45].…”

“…The environmental friendly CS is an ideal low-cost matrix. It meets the current market demands because of its easy production, less immunogenicity, nontoxicity, high biodegradability and desirable stability [61,62]. These superior properties have impelled extensive applications of CS as a support/matrix for enzyme immobilization.…”
