Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus-Associated Infections following Septorhinoplasty

Abstract: A 26-year-old healthy female nurse underwent an uncomplicated open approach septorhinoplasty for nasal obstruction and aesthetic concerns. The procedure consisted of a septoplasty, spreader grafts, cephalic trim, tongue-in-groove displacement of the lower-lateral cartilages, a dome-spanning suture, medial and lateral osteotomies, and bilateral type 2 Weir excisions. As per our standard practice, a single dose of preoperative azithromycin was provided given self-reported allergies to penicillin, cephalosporins,… Show more

“…If MRSA is identified then decolonisation treatment should be used and perioperative antibiotics should be considered, especially in revision or complex cases. Similarly, Abuzeid et al supported a comprehensive diagnostic work up and pre-operative risk stratification with respect to post-SRP MRSA related infections 5 .…”

“…Similarly, Abuzeid et al supported a comprehensive diagnostic work up and preoperative risk stratification with respect to post-SRP MRSA related infections. 5 Key message: infections post-SRP are rare. Standard screening for MRSA colonization may be worth considering particularly in high-risk groups.…”

“…Albeit the risk of infection is very small, a surgeon’s fear over the impact of 1 postoperative infection case prompts this widespread, and often prolonged, administration of antibiotics. 9 Antibiotic use, however, is not devoid of complications. Currently, 700,000 deaths annually are attributed to antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections, primarily driven by antibiotic overuse.…”

“…Due to AMR, there is a specific concern over a possible relationship between nasal surgical-site infections (SSIs) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus . 9 11 Antibiotics can have additional negative implications including gastrointestinal sequelae, Clostridium difficile infection and allergic reactions.…”
