Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus containing the Panton-Valentine leucocidin gene in Germany in 2005 and 2006

Abstract: caMRSA ST80 still predominate; however, caMRSA ST8 exhibiting the characteristics of the 'USA300' clone became the second most frequent. Routine detection of this clone in clinical bacteriology can be easily performed by PCR.

“…However, the epidemiology in Bilbao appeared unusual. First, contrary to all previously published European data, the most common PVL-positive CA-MRSA clone is not the European ST80-MRSA clone (8,17,20,35,36) but the USA300 clone and its Latin American variants. This is likely related to the specific and intensive population exchange between Spain and this continent.…”

“…As previously described in Europe, PVL genes were detected in strains with different genetic backgrounds (9,28,30,35,36). However, the epidemiology in Bilbao appeared unusual.…”

“…An ST88 clone was also isolated in Asia (11), with the significant difference that the Nigerian clone expresses PVL and is sensitive to tetracycline and fusidic acid, in contrast to European CA-MRSA clones (32). Therefore, epidemiological studies of the clonal relationships of MRSA strains in Nigeria with worldwide clones would be useful and important for understanding the global dissemination of such clones.…”

“…Nigeria is the most densely populated African country, and Ibadan is the capital of the Southwest province Oyo, which has a population of 3.6 million and is the largest geographical area. Over the past 20 years, the incidences of both community-acquired (CA) and hospital-acquired (HA) S. aureus infections have increased, while antibiotic treatment is increasingly hampered by the spread of S. aureus strains that are resistant to multiple antibiotics, including methicillin (meticillin) (10,11,19,32).…”

“…The most common European CA-MRSA clone is ST80, otherwise defined the ''European clone'' [64]. Other frequently identified clones are ST30, originally defined as the West Pacific clone, and the USA300 clone [52,65].…”
