Method for Attaining Caraway Seed Oil Fractions with Different Composition

Abstract: Caraway (Carum carvi L.) is a medicinal and aromatic plant; its seeds (fruits) are used as spice and they contain essential oils. We hypothesized that by collecting caraway oil at different time points during the extraction process, we could obtain oil fractions with distinct chemical composition. A hydrodistillation time (HDT) study was conducted to test the hypothesis. The caraway seed oil fractions were collected at eight different HDT (at 0 - 2, 2 - 7, 7 - 15, 15 - 30, 30 - 45, 45 - 75, 75 - 105, and 105 -… Show more

“…The specific composition of the EO fractions that were eluted at different hydrodistillation timeframes can be attributed to the different boiling points of the respective EO constituents [43,44]. The EOs are complex products and they include a number of constituents with different molecular weights and diverse temperature separation points.…”

“…A Hewlett Packard gas chromatograph GC, Hewlett Packard model 6890, Hewlett-Packard, Palo Alto, CA, USA was used for the analyses of the essential oil samples collected at the 8 distillation time intervals and the control distillation. The procedure for the GC analysis was described in Shiwakoti et al 35 . Briefly, the GC instrument had a GC column HPINNOWAX cross-linked PEG; 30 m 0.32 mm 0.5 μm and an auto sampler.…”
