In November 2021, 500kV Wendeng pumped storage infrastructure projects in Shandong were affected by extreme bad weather, continuously galloping occurred on key devices, which resulted in damaging to some conductors and fittings and equipment, and brought large losses to the construction of Shandong power grid. To understand and prevent similar galloping disasters, the main amplitude and frequency characteristics of galloping were clarified by analyzing the topography around, the line’s design parameters and the observation data on site. Then by reviewing the local weather process, clear the weather process of temperature, precipitation, wind direction and other elements before and after the occurrence of galloping, and combined with applied mechanics modelling and analysis, to clarify the quantitative inducing factors of galloping, proposed for galloping characteristics of the analysis of applied mechanics methods for the infrastructure line, provided a theoretical basis and technical support to prevent galloping for the subsequent transmission line infrastructure projects in the power grid in Shandong as well as in China.
