Drilling muds with less environmental impact are highly desired over conventional diesel-based mud systems, especially in light of the emerging strict environmental laws. In this article, a novel oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion drilling fluid formulated with a methyl ester extracted from Indian mango seed oil was evaluated. The effect of the weight percent of different constituents of the emulsion/suspension including the oil phase, bentonite, and polyanionic cellulose polymer on the rheology and the fluid loss was examined. The methyl ester oil phase/mud system displayed superior physical, chemical, rheological and filtration properties relative to the diesel and the mango seed oil. Eco-toxicity of the methyl ester and diesel (O/W) emulsion mud systems was assessed using the acute lethal concentration test. The Indian mango methyl ester (O/W) emulsion mud displayed much less impact on fish population. Flow characteristics collected from the flow model at 85 °C suggested excellent shear thinning behavior of the Indian mango methyl ester (IMME) (O/W) emulsion mud. Moreover, the IMME (O/W) emulsion displayed strong pseudoplastic behavior, an attractive feature in a drilling mud, with increasing clay content and polymer concentration. The methyl ester mud was thermally stable over a wide range of the constituent concentrations. Furthermore, a particle size analysis revealed that engineered drilling muds targeting suspension of particles with certain size range can be formulated by changing the volume fraction of the methyl ester in the mud system.

Generation of huge amount of the toxic and hazardous wastes coming out of various industrial and domestic activities is becoming a major threat to the society. In the long run, mainly because of nonscientific storage, disposal and closure, and due to the presence of undesirable concentration(s) of chemicals and radionuclides, elevated temperatures and microbial activity, these wastes (read contaminants) interact with geomaterials, viz., soils, rock mass, groundwater. This interaction, termed as contaminant-geomaterial interaction, depending upon the severity of the contaminant(s) and interaction time, might alter overall characteristics of the geomaterials. Unfortunately, conventional laboratory and field instrumentation techniques are not well equipped to capture such interaction(s) and the mechanisms that prevail in the geomaterials. Hence, to achieve these objectives, evolving adequate and workable strategies, and modalities, that are nondestructive, noninvasive and economical is desirable. In this context, author's association with several industries resulted in development of innovative, cost-effective, yet efficient techniques that facilitate laboratory and/or in situ simulation and monitoring of such interaction(s). Details of these techniques, the philosophy behind their creation and the way they can be employed for safeguarding geoenvironment, from deterioration, are presented and discussed in this paper. Also, a brief discussion on some of the real-life situations where such techniques can be applied easily, by suitably modifying them, is presented for the benefit of the aspiring researchers and professionals.

The average particle size and its distribution are major characteristics of a powder. Instrumental techniques, i.e. particle size analysers, are frequently used and span a wide size range. The selection of the most suitable measurement procedure for a particular application may present a problem, aggravated by the complexity of comparing results produced by different methods. The laser diffraction method is the most popular method of analysis. The authors therefore investigated the conditions required to improve the accuracy of the measurement. These conditions include the sample preparation (solvent, dispersant), the dispersion itself, and the optical characteristics of the particles. The paper summarizes the findings and defines general rules to be respected.
