Methodology, Results and Complications in 2000 Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy Procedures

Abstract: Since the installation of an extracorporeal shock wave lithotriptor (ESWL) unit 12 months ago, 2000 lithotripsy procedures have been performed. Overall, 68.4% of patients were stone-free by the end of the first month. Residual lithiasis (fragments less than 0.5 cm) was seen in 19.7% of patients and significant lithiasis (fragments greater than 0.5 cm) was observed in 10.1%. Complications were obstruction, infection, headache due to the epidural anaesthesia, anuria, renal failure, perirenal haematoma and cardia… Show more

“…Of our patients, 76.6% were stonefree at 3 months, and in another 16.6% there was marked improvement in symptoms although residual lithiasis was observed. These results appear very similar to a previous study of the efficacy of ESWL [9], Regarding the frequency of renal colic and UTIs, marked improvement was observed in our patients. It is reasonable to assume that the reduction of stone mass obtained by ESWL therapy and the reduced number of obstructed upper urinary tracts offers a direct benefit to the patient by reducing the number of renal colic and UTI attacks.…”

“…Results are reported using the guidelines of the first UK consensus conference on lithotripter terminology, held between 75 and 90% [6][7][8][9]. However, there have been few comparisons between PCN and ESWL for treating in 1989 [14].…”

“…30 Microscopic hematuria occurs in virtually all cases, however gross hematuria appears only in about one third of patient. 31 A prospective study of 3,241 patients with calculi larger than 4 mm undergoing ESWL (7,245 sessions) and monitored for a period of three months reported 4,075 complications, including renal colic (40%), gross hematuria (32%), urinary obstruction (30.9%) and perirenal hematoma or subclinical subcapsular hematoma (4.6%) as the most common. Furthermore, symptomatic bacteriuria was diagnosed in 9.7% of cases.…”
