Methods for Ripple Index evaluation in DC Low Voltage Distribution Networks

Abstract: Power Quality indices for ripple evaluation in DC Low Voltage networks are presented and discussed. Ripple is interpreted in a more general way than a simple periodic fluctuation of network voltage due to rectifying harmonics: the indices are conceived to cope with PQ definition of several standards in terms of frequency range and related phenomena. The proposed PQ indices are implemented for real-time execution; performances are evaluated in Matlab.

“…The expressions defined in [20] are briefly summarized. Given the q(t) quantity (in this case the pantograph voltage V p ), the peak-to-peak value q pp over m T samples interval is the exact ripple index, RI, that is the maximum peak-to-peak value over a given time interval, and is given by…”

“…RI is then calculated as the sum of the components of the set K thr , containing values of the index k with corresponding component Q[k] with amplitude larger than a given threshold thr; Sum-of-Amplitudes (SA) and Sum-of-Amplitudes-and-Phases (SAP) rules, as given in [20] ,…”

“…Therefore, the VMD algorithms is promising in detecting the real-life non-stationary signals of DC links. There are only a few articles on the ripple detection of DC signal [33]. The discrete Fourier transform (DFT) algorithm for ripple evaluation in DC Low Voltage networks are presented in [33], which exhibits similar performance with the analog bandpass filter.…”
