Methods to Induce Analgesia and Anesthesia in Crustaceans: A Supportive Decision Tool

Abstract: Methods to induce analgesia and anesthesia for research purposes, handling, transport, or stunning have been used in 71 species of crustaceans. A non-systematic literature search was conducted on crustacean anesthetic methods. This review presents a comprehensive evaluation of drugs and non-chemical methods used to provide analgesia and anesthesia in many crustacean species rather than just decapod crustaceans. This information allows users to select an appropriate method or agent for their species of interest… Show more

“…This study did not require ethical approval. Animals were sacrificed by freezing in order to lower metabolic rates in a humane way and minimize suffering ( Yue, 2008 , Rotlant et al, 2023 ). We reduced the need for animal sacrifice in this study by using digital samples for interspecific comparisons, and by using samples that had been collected previously for other studies for each of the intraspecific comparisons.…”

“…The second observation period occurred about 6-11 min after the application of benzocaine. Future experiments on benzocaine or other local anaesthetics should test over different durations to establish the timing of aversive and anaesthetic properties [14].…”

“…Shrimp weights were measured at 3‐week intervals and all the shrimp in each tank were counted and individually weighed at the end of the 53‐day trial to calculate weight gain (WG), feed utilization efficiency, and survival. Six shrimp per tank (18 shrimps per dietary treatment) were randomly captured from each tank and anesthetized in ice‐cold water (Hasanthi & Lee, 2023; Rotllant et al, 2023). Hemolymph was collected from each shrimp and mixed with Alsever's solution (Sigma–Aldrich, St. Louis, MO) by 1:2 (v/v).…”
