In the field of higher education in Ecuador, there is a phenomenon where students abandon the career, they were initially enrolled in. This research article aims to identify the determining factors that influence dropout, analyzing sociodemographic variables and economic, technological, institutional, and academic variables. The methodology used is action research built from educational practice. A survey was used to address several factors applied to 260 students of the second, fourth, and seventh levels of undergraduate study at a private institution. As a result, it was found that the most determining factor for a student to abandon their university career in the distance mode, with 72.31%, is the economic factor. Finally, it is concluded that students' permanence is affected mainly by socioeconomic aspects, which cause economic resources, illness, lack of time, and academic performance to be the most representative factors when deciding whether to remain or abandon a university career. This information increases the bibliography that deals with student behavior to search for alternatives to work on students' permanence.

ResumenEste artículo de reflexión derivado de investigación presenta una descripción y un análisis sobre el proceso metodoló-gico que se utilizó para develar la representación social de excelencia en cuatro posgrados de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, UNAM. Se expone de manera detallada el trabajo artesanal del investigador que incluye desde la tarea de la problematización, hasta la forma de presentar los hallazgos, pasando por la necesaria elección de los instrumentos de acopio y los mecanismos para la sistematización de la información. La reflexión final resalta la importancia de revisar la metodología en su parte más dinámica y no solo como una descripción anticipada o un catálogo de recursos disponibles. Tiene un sentido didáctico en la medida en que muestra, con un ejemplo, una práctica concreta de investigación, es decir, describe procesos efectivos realizados durante la generación de conocimientos. De tal manera, puede ser usada por profesores de licenciatura o maestría que imparten materias del área metodológica, para mostrar y explicar las operaciones y quehaceres que el investigador en activo enfrenta en el proceso mismo de indagación. AbstractThis reflexive article, derived from research, presents a description and analysis of the methodological process that was used to reveal the social representation of excellence in four graduate programs of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, (UNAM-Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México). It describes in detail the craftmanship work of a researcher that ranges from the problematization task, up to how to present the findings, which involve the necessary choice of tools for data collection and the mechanisms for systematizing information. The final reflection highlights the importance of reviewing the methodology in its most dynamic part, and not only as an early description or a catalog of available resources.
