Micro‐computed tomography analysis of post space preparation in root canals filled with carrier‐based thermoplasticized gutta‐percha

Abstract: The differences between the Thermafil, GuttaCore and gutta-percha groups in the number of samples with post space deviation and in linear deviation of post space preparation were associated with the presence or absence of a carrier as well as the different carrier materials.

“…A two-dimensional evaluation of split specimens also demonstrated similar amounts of filling remnants after retreatment of Thermafil, GuttaCore and thermoplasticized gutta-percha (Nevares et al 2015). Micro-CT imaging allows a quantitative assessment of dentine removal during retreatment procedures (R€ odig et al 2012, 2014) or post-space preparation (Schroeder et al 2017). In this study, 2.7-3.2 mm 3 of dentine was removed during retreatment irrespective of the filling technique.…”

“…Several techniques and materials have been developed over the last decades aiming to achieve the optimal properties required for the root canal filling process. Hence, many studies have compared the performance of obturation techniques in different aspects; however, they have yielded disparate results [24]. To date, no filling material or technique has been considered ideal, and the occurrence of failure has been observed when trying to obtain a void-free homogeneous sealing of root canals [2].…”
