Micro flow injection ICP-MS analysis of high matrix samples: an investigation of its capability to measure trace elements in iron meteorites

Abstract: The coupling of a micro-flow injection sample introduction system to a highly versatile quadrupole ICP-MS (FI-ICP-MS) has been demonstrated to achieve accurate and precise trace element measurements for several iron meteorites.

“…23 Also, small volumes of the samples injected into the carrier stream decrease the risk of apparatus clogging. 24,25 Moreover, FA used in place of continuous pneumatic nebulisation offers liquid waste reduction, lower sample consumption, and faster analysis. 26 Additionally, the risk of contamination can be minimised because matrix separation and pre-concentration of analytes can be performed online, together with various calibration strategies in a closed system.…”

“…The first commercially available flow injection automation system (FIAS) was introduced by PerkinElmer in the 1990s. 25 Its great advantage was the integration of the software controlling the FIAS with the spectrometer's software, which allowed for the automatic triggering of the signal reading at the appropriate stage of the flow system program. Until then, the transient nature of signals obtained in FI-ICP-MS and the lack of adequate software made automation of the analysis complicated and problematic.…”

“…[10][11][12] In the last few decades, it has also been used for trace element analysis in steels. [13][14][15] However, a noticeable limitation in these measurements is the large contribution of metals to the matrix effects, 16,17 which may result in plasma suppression and long-term signal dri due to matrix deposition on the interface cones. 18,19 Due to the excessive inux of positively charged matrix ions space charge effects can occur, leading to the defocusing of the ion beam to the mass spectrometer.…”
