Microalgae Brewery Wastewater Treatment: Potentials, Benefits and the Challenges

Abstract: Concerns about environmental safety have led to strict regulations on the discharge of final brewery effluents into water bodies. Brewery wastewater contains huge amounts of organic compounds that can cause environmental pollution. The microalgae wastewater treatment method is an emerging environmentally friendly biotechnological process. Microalgae grow well in nutrient-rich wastewater by absorbing organic nutrients and converting them into useful biomass. The harvested biomass can be used as animal feed, bio… Show more

“…Its ability to survive in adverse conditions and its ubiquitous nature also make it a potentially useful algae for industrial wastewater treatment. Specifically, the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris is known for its robustness, in conjunction with being one of the fastest growing species and is easily cultivated [ 44 ].…”

“…Microalgae act as a powerful biotechnology platform to synthesize valuable products by recovering nutrients from the culture medium [1][2][3][4]. Although the idea of biofuel production by using microalgae is not new, it is still being taken seriously, owing to the probability to alleviate global warming and inhibit the escalating price of petroleum [5].…”

“…To date, a variety of wastewater types, such as brewery wastewater [4], livestock wastewater [8][9][10], aquaculture sewage [11], and municipal wastewater [12] have been successfully utilized for the microalgal production. Campus sewage is one type of municipal wastewater, and the volume of discharge is vast.…”
