Microarray‐based component‐resolved diagnosis of latex allergy: isolated IgE‐mediated sensitization to latexprofilin Hev b8 may act as confounder

Abstract: Immediate type allergy to latex is still a widespread problem. Latex-allergic patients undergoing diagnostic and operative medical procedures are at risk of potentially life-threatening reactions. Accurate diagnostic methods are therefore crucial. The aim of this retrospective study was to discriminate between sensitization and relevant allergy to latex based on an easy and suitable diagnostic approach. In 14 patients with clinical symptoms and 27 controls, latex skin prick tests (SPT), IgE against latex (CAP)… Show more

“…Whether NRL sIgE-sensitized patients have clinically relevant symptoms or not appears to be mirrored in the concentration of sIgE, a correlation also found in other studies [11, 20]. We found significantly higher levels of NRL sIgE in patients with immediate symptoms compared to patients without (see Table 2).…”

“…They have a conserved structure across different plant species, resulting in sIgE antibodies reacting to a broad pattern of cross-reactive profilins [16]. The NRL allergen component Hev b 8 is a profilin, and cross-sensitivity between Hev b 8 and timothy grass has been observed [17, 18], resulting in NRL sIgE-sensitized patients who are asymptomatic on exposure to NRL and mono-sensitized to Hev b 8 [2, 8, 17-20]. …”

“…The ISAC 112 platform provides a minimally invasive, rapid and efficient means of testing IgE sensitizations to a broad panel of allergen components [3], and has been used as an aid in the diagnosis and risk assessment of allergic patients [20][21][22][23][24][25], to predict allergic symptoms as well as for prescription and monitoring of immunotherapy [26][27][28][29][30], sensitization profiling [31][32][33][34], and for the study of allergic diseases [16,[35][36][37].…”
