Microbial Fuel Cells, Related Technologies, and Their Applications

Abstract: Microbial fuel cells present an emerging technology for utilizing the metabolism of microbes to fuel processes including biofuel, energy production, and the bioremediation of environments. The application and design of microbial fuel cells are of interest to a range of disciplines including engineering, material sciences, and microbiology. In addition, these devices present numerous opportunities to improve sustainable practices in different settings, ranging from industrial to domestic. Current research is co… Show more

“…Drendel [34] proposed that the external power generation and energy efficiency were considered as indices for PEM performance. The main results established in this work: five designs with different channel shapes and gas flow patterns, were simulated numerically using computational fluid dynamics (CFD).…”

“…For the basic description and advanced understanding of the chemistry, performances, and applications of these devices, not intended to be covered in this review, the readers are invited to check the most recent contributions to the field, for example [187][188][189][190][191][192]. In the following sections, emphasis and criticism will be put on the architectures, supports, and soft materials used to obtain wearable and flexible devices by using advanced techniques and to show case benchmark studies in EFCs and MFCs.…”

“…Bioelectrochemical Systems (BESs) are classified as one of the most attractive renewable technology for energy conversion [1,2]. Among the various BESs, Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) allow simultaneous electrical energy harvesting and wastewater treatment [1,[3][4][5][6][7] by the catalytic action of microorganisms, which oxidize the organic matter in the waste at the anode side of the cell to produce carbon dioxide, protons and electrons. Protons and electrons migrate through an external circuit and recombine with oxygen at the cathode side, producing water [1,4].…”
