“…Previous studies demonstrated that H 2 O 2 reduced the content of MCs in Microcystis aeruginosa by down‐regulating the expression of the relevant genes mcy H, mcy A, and mcy D and directly decomposing the MCs via oxidation (Schuurmans et al. ). However, glyphosate was found to stimulate the synthesis of MCs (Wu et al.…”

“…Some external or internal stimulation may cause both an increased content of intracellular MC per cell and up-regulation of mcyE gene expression [13]. On the other hand, Schuurmans et al [3] hypothesised that MC may suppress the activity of proteins involved in H 2 O 2 degradation. Furthermore, some opposite conclusions have been presented regarding the impact of H 2 O 2 on MC production by toxic strains.…”

“…Furthermore, some opposite conclusions have been presented regarding the impact of H 2 O 2 on MC production by toxic strains. Low, environmentally relevant concentrations of H 2 O 2 may induce MC production that is necessary for the protection against such mild oxidative stress [1], however higher H 2 O 2 doses result in a decrease in the total (extra-and intra-cellular) MC content [3]. As suggested previously [10], 2-5 mg L −1 of H 2 O 2 is probably too little to induce cyanobacterial lysis in dense blooms and can stimulate the accumulation of cell-bound (intracellular) MC as a reaction to oxidative stress.…”
