Microdisplays: Mini‐LED, Micro‐OLED, and Micro‐LED

Abstract: The field of next‐generation microdisplays is flourishing. Relevant display technologies, such as mini‐light emission diodes (mini‐LEDs), micro‐organic light emission diodes (micro‐OLEDs), and micro‐light emission diodes (micro‐LEDs) are thus in the urgent stage of development. From this perspective, comprehensive and systematical analyzes are conducted for the aforesaid microdisplay configurations. A holistic view of microdisplay technologies is developed with the corresponding performance metrics, providing … Show more

“…2 They are capable of providing high resolution and excellent color saturation, making them particularly suitable for AR and VR applications. 3,4 However, challenges arise as the size of these devices decreases, with the edge effect becoming prominent and impacting the overall luminescence of micro-LEDs. 5,6 Additionally, optical cross-talk in adjacent pixels and the sensitivity of quantum dots to moisture become more pronounced at tiny sizes.…”

“…1–3 In recent years, its application has expanded to OLED TVs and other fields, necessitating additional research to improve the color filter performance. 4,5 Pigments and dyes are used as materials for color filters, with pigments excelling in reliability but having weak optical properties, and dyes displaying excellent optical properties but weaker reliability. 6,7 Although preliminary studies have been conducted to develop materials that combine the advantages of pigments and dyes, there are limitations in developing such materials due to their intrinsic properties.…”

“…In response to the growing demand for high-definition display technology, light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are constantly developing in the direction of miniaturization. 1–3 For display technologies like virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), micro-LEDs with chip sizes smaller than 5 μm are typically necessary. 4,5 However, the currently commercial microscale patterned sapphire substrates (MPSSs) exhibit pattern periods of approximately 3 μm, which already approach the chip sizes of micro-LEDs.…”
