Microflora in fish digestive tract plays significant role in digestion and metabolism

Abstract: Microflora of the environment plays an important role in the formation of the microflora of the digestive tract of fishes (Strom and Olafsen Microbiology of poecilotherms Elsevier, Amsterdam, pp 181-185 1990; Hansen et al. Appl Environ Microbiol 58:461-470 1992). Compared to water, digestive tract is an ecosystem far richer in nutrients and therefore more favorable for the growth of the majority of bacteria. Definitely, not all bacteria in food which gain entry in the digestive tract of fishes establish themse… Show more

“…Nonetheless, there are other examples in domestic ruminants (Majak, 1992) where an increase in toxicity occurs via microbial modification. Although hindgut fermenters are expected to benefit from microbial detoxification of PSMs less than foregut fermenters, microbes inhabit the mucosal lining of the intestine prior to the cecum in many terrestrial (Frey et al, 2010;Yamamoto et al, 2009) and aquatic animals (Ganguly and Prasad, 2011;Mondal et al, 2008). Additional studies are clearly needed to identify the positive and negative influences microbial communities have on herbivores with either complex or simplified digestive tracts such as those found in marine and freshwater invertebrates (Brunet et al, 1994;Freese and Schink, 2011).…”

“…Till date, no pathogenic microflora or microflora of aquatic interest regarding fish respiratory system have been reported. Microflora residing on skin has no role to play in nutrient digestion and metabolism in fish [1].…”

“…In-depth study has been done on the various aspects of the microflora of the digestive tract of fish but data about the impact of xenobiotics on the intestinal microflora of hydrobiont is limited. If bacteria non-typical of the living environment of hydrobionts are abundant in the water surrounding the latter, they make a negative influence on the immune system of fish by restraining it, thus impacting the animal's general physiological state [1].…”
