This paper reports the results of an extensive study of the deformation and fracturing of Bukit Timah granite in Singapore under uniaxial and triaxial loading conditions. In the investigation, the stress fracturing thresholds (crack initiation, crack coalescence and crack damage) were determined using stress-strain and stiffness curves and the acoustic emission (AE) detection technique. Crack initiation was found to be best determined by the volumetric strain curve in both uniaxial and triaxial compression tests. The subjectivity of determining the crack closure region and these stress thresholds can be overcome and the results validated by the AE technique by simply observing the cumulative curve of the AE count plotted against deviator stress, which showed four distinctive zones of fracturing. Furthermore, AE detection in the loading stage was found to be a powerful method for determining the phenomena of stable and unstable crack propagation, which are helpful in predicting the rockburst phenomenon. Finally, a comprehensive petrographical analysis using a petrological microscope and a scanning electron microscope was performed to identify the mode of cracking and the characterisation of the cracking pattern.

Edificado en las primeras décadas del siglo XVII, el convento-colegio de San Buenaventura era un importante conjunto arquitectónico del centro histórico de Sevilla que fue demolido, casi en su totalidad, a mediados del ochocientos, con motivo de la intervención viaria llevada a cabo en los aledaños de la actual Plaza Nueva. El artículo, que es resultado de una investigación efectuada en el Archivo General Militar de Madrid, analiza y da a conocer la planta y sección del edificio, documentos gráficos levantados en 1847 por el arquitecto académico Juan Manuel Caballero que tienen un enorme interés porque reproducen la exacta organización de su arquitectura. SUMMARY Acoustic images of two common rocks, granodiorite and limestone, are studied to explore the kind of geological information that they can provide. The contrast is primarily due to Rayleigh waves; in rock specimens they are mainly affected in their propagation by crystal anisotropy and surface discontinuities. Therefore, acoustic microscopy makes possible detailed identification of intragranular structures in the rock‐forming minerals (very fine cracks, grain and subgrain boundaries, etc.); these features may appear more sharply than in transmitted polarized light microscopy or in scanning electron microscopy. In particular the acoustic images are effective in microfractographic studies, they can show not only the finest cracks, even those much less than a wavelength wide, but also their position in relation to the grain and subgrain structure.
